The Data Protection Act 1998 protects individuals from improper use of information held about them. At Cheshire Mortgage Brokers, we firmly believe that successful relationships with customers can only be achieved if customers feel comfortable with the way that we handle the information given to us.

Cheshire Mortgage Brokers complies with the Data Protection Act 1998 when obtaining, processing and holding customer information.

All your personal information will be treated as private and confidential, even when you are no longer a customer and information will only be held for the purposes for which it has been given or which we have told you about. We will ensure that it is accurate and up to date, that we do not keep it for longer than necessary and that appropriate measures are in place to protect the information from any unauthorised use.

Personal information will not be passed to any third parties without your permission, unless we are required to do so, for example, when we are legally compelled to, where you consent, where there is a duty to the public to disclose or where our interests require disclosure.

The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to receive details of the information the Company holds about you and to have any inaccurate details amended. Any request for your data must be in writing accompanied by the appropriate fee and addressed to the Company's Secretary.

Cheshire Mortgage Brokers forms part of the Cheshire Building Society Marketing Group (the Group), a list of whose members may be obtained from the Society's Secretary. The Group will use the information you have given for the administration of your account and for statistical analysis. The Group may also use your information for credit scoring, debt collection and fraud prevention and to make you aware by mail, telephone, email or other reasonable means, of products or services offered by the Group or other selected suppliers.

Each Cheshire Mortgage Brokers employee has personal responsibility for maintaining customer confidentiality and we provide training to all our staff to reinforce their obligations to our customers.

Sensitive Personal Data

Under the Data Protection Act 1998, the general information you supply about yourself is known as your personal data. Information about any criminal convictions, ethnic origin and health is called "sensitive personal data" and you have a right to prevent your sensitive personal data being processed.

As part of our assessment of a mortgage application, we will be obtaining, processing and holding personal data, including sensitive personal data, together with other information supplied.

Your data, including sensitive personal data, may be disclosed to and held by third party organisations for the sole purpose of compliance monitoring.

Marketing

Occasionally, we will bring to your attention additional services and products, which may be of benefit to you. However, when you become a customer, we will give you the opportunity on the Terms of Business letter, to say that you do not wish to receive this information. We will remind you annually that you can ask not to receive this information.

We will take care when sending marketing material to you, particularly if it relates to loans or overdrafts, or if you are under 18.

Money Laundering

Cheshire Mortgage Brokers, like other financial services organisations, is legally obliged to confirm customer identity by collecting and recording information about them. Hence Cheshire Mortgage Brokers' stringent identification requirements for new customers who wish to open mortgage accounts. We are also obliged to report details of any suspicious transactions to the Serious Organised Crime Agency.

EMail

The most secure method of e-mailing Cheshire Mortgage Brokers is to use the contact form on our website. Emails sent in other ways will be 'insecure' and the amount of confidential information you include should be kept to a minimum. When we reply to an 'insecure' e-mail we will maintain confidentiality concerning your personal information. We will ensure that your email address is not given to unauthorised third parties.

If you have not already done so, it is strongly recommended that you install anti-virus software on your PC. Please note that you will need to keep this software up-to-date to deal with any newly discovered viruses. We at Cheshire Mortgage Brokers use up to the minute virus checking software to ensure that any data that is passed from us to you is virus free.
